These are moving poems that hold a fine tension between passion
and restraint. Here is the balance that makes art: the emotion is agonizingly
honest, the rendering of it beautiful. This is Phebe Davidson's best book
to date. Phebe Davidson's poems are dazzling orbits of attention, desire,
and compelling presence. She writes with gusto and gravity. There is clearness
and calm beyond the swirl, and she takes us there. The way her poems couple
a sustained sense of regretnot unhappy and not happy eitherwith
a forward-moving, compelling energy, is something I find utterly admirable. Dreameater plays in the shades and corners of the poet's
imagination, exploring the ominous crevices beneath the surface. There
is horror behind the deceptively simple lines... Ultimately, Davidson's
vision in this collection is apocalyptic; yet horror is balanced with
delicacy, the clear riff of language creates lines that startle with bare
truth. This is a scary mix expertly handled by a poet who makes us see
that darkness defines the light. Available from
