Lois Harrod's poems are everything I need poetry to be: smart, sensual, risky, willing to tell the strange truths of the ordinary heart. Harrod knows how deceptive the bright surface of domestic life can be. Her poems are like sonar, sent down from a shimmering surface to sound the submerged terrain where we really live. in that part of the deeper sea are discoveries only a mature voice and a deft imagination find words for Lois Harrod has found all the right words in these remarkable, bracing poems. Lynn Powell I'd call each of these new poems love poems and Harrod's territory, both the body and the world. Part of the Deeper Sea is an intimate, urgent book about relationship and change, and Lois Harrod is a contemplative and observant storyteller who seems consistently 'to be talking into the mouth of [her] darling.' Her small, exact, often funny storiesmore often than not punctuated by perfect imagescast enormous shadows of context and character, yet seldom waver in their precision, their music, or their power. Hers is a voice of both startling breadth and intimacy, a voice worth listening to. Her reader is her darlingand lucky to be so. Renée Ashley Palanquin Press |
